Losing weight before an Indian wedding — without starving through it
Twelve weeks is enough to change how you look and feel at the function. Crash dieting is how you waste them.
Every wedding season, the same person walks into our Parramatta studio: three months out from the function — theirs, their son's, their daughter's — wanting visible change by the sangeet. Good news: twelve weeks is genuinely enough. Bad news: the default plan — eat almost nothing and walk for hours — produces a smaller, softer, exhausted version of you, right on time for the photos.
Why the crash fails specifically at weddings
A severe deficit without strength training burns muscle along with fat, so the shape you were chasing never arrives — the scale drops but the mirror shrugs. Then wedding week arrives with its five functions and fifteen meals, the starved body rebounds hard, and half the loss returns before the reception. We have watched this movie many times. It has one ending.
The goal is not to arrive at the wedding lighter. It is to arrive stronger, leaner, and able to enjoy the food without fear.
The twelve-week version that works
Weeks 1–2: set the machine. A moderate deficit — not a heroic one. Protein to 1.6–2g per kilo from food you already eat: dal doubled, paneer daily, eggs if you eat them. Three strength sessions on the calendar like they're wedding appointments, because they are.
Weeks 3–10: the boring middle where everything happens. Progressive strength work — this is what changes your shape, not the treadmill. Waist measured every two weeks. Functions during this period: one plate, enjoy it, next meal normal. One biryani cannot out-vote seventy consistent meals — unless you let the guilt spiral do it.
Weeks 11–12: taper, don't panic. No last-minute starvation — it flattens you and shows in your face. Hold the routine, sleep properly, and let the work you banked show up.
The numbers to expect, honestly
Most people running this properly drop 4 to 8 kilos of actual fat in twelve weeks, with visible shape change from the strength work — shoulders in the sherwani, waist in the lehenga. More than that is possible but usually costs muscle, which defeats the point.
